After spending decades navigating the damp, grey winters of the UK, my dream was always to find a corner of Europe where the sun felt like a permanent resident. A few years ago, I packed my bags, officially retired, and moved to Nerja. To say it has exceeded my expectations would be an understatement.

Nerja has a magical quality that instantly makes you feel at ease. While it offers all the comforts and social buzz an expat could wish for, it has stubbornly—and beautifully—retained its traditional Andalusian charm.

The Golden Years in the Sun My mornings now look very different than they used to. They usually begin with a gentle stroll along the Burriana beach, followed by a café con leche at a local beachfront chiringuito. One of my absolute favourite spots is the Balcón de Europa. Sitting there on a clear morning, looking out over the Mediterranean with a light breeze, is a feeling that never gets old. It’s the ultimate reminder of why I chose to retire here.

A Community Like No Other What surprised me most about Nerja is how easy it was to settle in. There is a wonderfully warm and active community of retirees here. Whether it's joining a local walking group, taking Spanish lessons, or just meeting up for tapas in the old town, there is always something to do and someone to chat with. You get the best of both worlds: the vibrant Spanish culture and a supportive network of fellow expats.

Final Thoughts Retirement shouldn't just be about slowing down; it should be about starting a new chapter. Nerja has given me the perfect backdrop for mine—plenty of sunshine, stunning views, and a relaxed pace of life that keeps me feeling young. If you are considering making the leap, my advice is simple: don't wait!
